History

The Beretta 92FS Vertec was designed for self-defense and law enforcement use. One major design goal was to reduce its grip size to allow small handed users to be able to use it with greater ease then the Beretta 92FS. Another goal was to reduce its length somewhat compared to a Beretta 92FS.

Specifications

Very similar to a Beretta 92FS, the Beretta 92FS Vertec uses a different alloy frame that has a thiner and smaller grip and that is fitted with a front equipment rail where a light or laser can be fitted. The barrel is somewhat shorter and thus less prone to damage at its muzzle. Both the front and rear sights are mounted in tapered dovetails on the slide.

Intended market

The Beretta 92FS Vertec is well suited for police or self-defense use.

Design advantages

Like the Beretta 92FS the Beretta 92FS Vertec is a safe, accurate and reliable pistol that is easy to use, even for people with smaller hands. It is also possible to fit a tactical light or a laser pointer which are features that appeal law enforcement users. Like the Beretta 92FS the slide is covered with Bruniton and the barrel bore is hard chromed. The Inox version has its slide and barrel made out of stainless steel. Like on the Beretta 92FS the slide mounted manual safety and decocking device which disconnects the trigger makes this pistol safe to unload.

Limitations

The Beretta 92FS Vertec has the same limitations as the Beretta 92. It is not well suited for use in deserts, jungles and arctic areas. While it will perform quite well in such harsh environments, any negligence in spring maintenance and cleaning will reduce its reliability. The Bruniton finish applied on the Beretta 92FS Vertec wears down quickly which leads to corrosion and more slide to frame play. The barrel surface, unprotected in the open slide is prone to corrosion. The Beretta 92FS Vertec Inox which is made out of stainless steel reduces corrosion problems to a minimum and eliminates the frame to slide play problem that occurs when the Brunition on a standard model wears away.
