William Oliver Lipinski (born December 22 1937), Polish-American politician, was a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 2005, representing the 3rd District of Illinois (mainly the inner suburbs of Chicago). He was born in Chicago, was educated at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, served in the United States Army Reserves, and was an administrator with the Chicago Park District and a member of the Chicago City Council before entering the House. On August 13, 2004, Lipinski withdrew his name from the November 2 election ballot, announcing that he would retire at the end of his current term, which expired on January, 2005. At Bill Lipinski's urging, Democratic party leaders named University of Tennessee professor Dan Lipinski, the congressman's son, to replace him on the ballot. Dan Lipinski won the November 2 race against light opposition in the heavily Democratic district.
