Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan

Bloomfield Township is a charter township located in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a wealthy suburb in Metro Detroit, the location of a country club which staged the 2004 Ryder Cup. It is also referred to as simply Bloomfield and is officially known as the Charter Township of Bloomfield. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 43,023.

It was incorporated in 1827, the first township to be established in Oakland County.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 67.4 km² (26.0 mi²). 64.6 km² (25.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.19% water.

Demographics

For reasons known only to the U.S. Census Bureau, Bloomfield Township was also defined as a census-designated place (CDP) in the 2000 Census. The final statistics for the township and the CDP are identical. In the 2003 census estimates, the CDP is no longer present and the name of the township appears as "Bloomfield charter township" rather than as "Bloomfield township" as in the 2000 census. As of the census2 of 2000, there are 43,023 people, 16,804 households, and 12,703 families residing in the township. The population density is 665.8/km² (1,724.5/mi²). There are 17,455 housing units at an average density of 270.1/km² (699.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 87.70% White, 4.30% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 6.47% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,804 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 21.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the township the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 32.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $103,897, and the median income for a family is $123,381. Males have a median income of $98,985 versus $50,540 for females. The per capita income for the township is $62,716. 2.5% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
