Brasher Falls-Winthrop is a census-designated place and region in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the region had a total population of 1,140.

This area is composed of Brasher Falls in the Town of Brasher, New York and Winthrop in the Town of Norfolk.

Geography

Brasher Falls-Winthrop is located at 44°48'6" North, 74°46'41" West (44.801791, -74.778013)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.41% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,140 people, 498 households, and 305 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 98.7/km² (255.7/mi²). There are 542 housing units at an average density of 46.9/km² (121.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.07% White, 0.53% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 0.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 498 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $30,505, and the median income for a family is $45,179. Males have a median income of $45,230 versus $23,421 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $18,263. 9.3% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.3% of those under the age of 18 and 15.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
