Callicoon (CDP), New York

Callicoon is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Sullivan County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 216.

Callicoon is in the western part of the county in the Town of Delaware (Note that the Town of Callicoon is a different place).

Rafting lumber down the river was an early occupation.

Geography

The community is located on the east bank of the Delaware River.

Callicoon is located at 41°45'56" North, 75°3'31" West (41.765831, -75.058682)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.39% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 216 people, 94 households, and 61 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 219.5/km² (565.1/mi²). There are 106 housing units at an average density of 107.7/km² (277.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 91.67% White, 4.63% Black or African American, 0.00% Native American, 3.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 6.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 94 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $33,162, and the median income for a family is $33,068. Males have a median income of $32,917 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,217. 16.8% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.8% of those under the age of 18 and 16.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
