Castlevania II: Simon's Quest is the North American and European title of Dracula II: The Accursed Seal (ドラキュラII呪いの封印 Dracula II: Noroi no Fūin), a Japanese console video game developed by Konami in 1987 for the Famicom Disk System. The following year it was ported to cartridge format and released in North America for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

The game features Simon Belmont and takes place in 1698, seven years after the first Castlevania game.

This game was the first game in the Castlevania series to venture away from straightforward side-scrolling gameplay, featuring some role-playing game-like elements.

Storyline

The game takes place seven years after the first Castlevania, after Simon Belmont defeated Dracula for the first time. A pestilence had been set upon the land and the townspeople were in danger.

Simon is actually facing the brunt of this curse - if he does not break it, he will surely die. The only way to break the Count's seal is by collecting his five body parts, mysteriously strewn throughout the land, and taking them into the depths of Castlevania to be burned.

Notes, remarks and Trivia

  • The game's controls are essentially the same as in the previous game, with the exception of a menu due to which the player may carry weapons with him.
  • There are three different endings to the game which alter according to how much time was used in playing the game through.
  • The game is often remarked as being too easy. At worst the player loses all of his hearts, but at no point will the player have to start the game over upon dying. Also the player does not need to defeat certain boss-enemies if he can simply avoid them.
  • A book loosely based on the game was also published.
  • The password theme of the game is was also Simon's theme in the Captain N cartoon.
  • Simon's appearance in this game is much more similar to his debut in Vampire Killer, wearing a red armour instead of the brown, "neo-barbarian" outfit from the last game. Also, his hair-colour and skin-tone have changed.
