Coffee cabinet

A coffee cabinet is a refreshing ice cream beverage usually found only in Rhode Island. Ask for one anywhere else in the world, and you'll get directed to the local kitchen renovation store. It consists of plain ice cream (not vanilla—plain means simply sweetened milk/cream. The closest one can get in the grocery store is "Dulce de Leche", made by Haagen-Dazs and other brands), coffee syrup, and milk. The ice cream must be slightly softened. The ingredients are combined and mixed in a drink blender (milkshake blender), and the result is a concoction similar to a frappe, but with a different taste due to the plain ice cream and syrup, as opposed to flavored ice cream.
Unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder to find an authentic cabinet, but the canonical place to obtain them in the East Bay is Delekta's Pharmacy in Warren, Rhode Island
As with downcity, the etymology of this term is unknown. One common, but unsubstantiated explanation is that the soda jerk or pharmacist kept the coffee syrup in one of the polished wooden cabinets behind the counter.
