Colfax, Louisiana

Colfax is a town located in Grant Parish, Louisiana. Both the town and parish were founded in 1869, the parish named for President Ulysses S. Grant and the town for his vice president, Schuyler Colfax.

The town is of historical importance due to the Colfax Massacre of 1873. In this Reconstruction-era violent incident, over 100 black men were killed.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,659 people, 600 households, and 408 families residing in the town. The population density is 429.9/km² (1,111.3/mi²). There are 709 housing units at an average density of 183.7/km² (474.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 30.98% White, 67.81% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 600 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.3% are married couples living together, 32.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 30.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 77.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $17,500, and the median income for a family is $20,000. Males have a median income of $25,313 versus $14,310 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,155. 41.0% of the population and 36.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 59.0% of those under the age of 18 and 25.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
