Curry County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 45,044. Its county seat is Clovis6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,646 km² (1,408 mi²). 3,641 km² (1,406 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 45,044 people, 16,766 households, and 11,870 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 19,212 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.40% White, 6.86% Black or African American, 1.00% Native American, 1.78% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 14.08% from other races, and 3.75% from two or more races. 30.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,766 households out of which 38.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 12.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.10% under the age of 18, 11.50% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 18.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 97.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,917, and the median income for a family is $33,900. Males have a median income of $25,086 versus $19,523 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,049. 19.00% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.10% of those under the age of 18 and 14.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
