Delhi (town), New York

Delhi is a town located in Delaware County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,629.

The Town of Delhi is in the east-central part of the county. The State University of New York at Delhi is located in this town, which contains the Village of Delhi. (Note that the name is pronounced with a long "i", "Dell-high")

History

The town was formed from the Towns of Kortright, Middletown, and Walton in 1789.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 167.3 km² (64.6 mi²). 167.2 km² (64.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,629 people, 1,493 households, and 928 families residing in the town. The population density is 27.7/km² (71.7/mi²). There are 1,818 housing units at an average density of 10.9/km² (28.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.90% White, 4.23% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,493 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the town the population is spread out with 16.0% under the age of 18, 27.5% from 18 to 24, 18.0% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,861, and the median income for a family is $48,125. Males have a median income of $31,136 versus $25,542 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,842. 9.8% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
