Evernight

Evernight is a turn-based massively multiplayer video game played over the Internet. Set in a fantasy realm, combatants struggle to be the first to construct the six parts of the Black Between, an artifact of ultimate power. The game has a small but extremely zealous fan base, and is player owned.
Moves occur at various intervals depending on the game (e.g. in blitz games one move every twenty minutes, other games each day, or on Monday-Wednesday-Friday). At the beginning of each move players receive resources depending on how many regions they control and may only move to adjacent regions (resembling the board games Diplomacy and Risk).
The game was originally developed by VR1 Entertainment, and marketed through Real Networks. VR1 eventually ended their relationship with Real and self-administered the game. Shortly thereafter, VR1 Entertainment was bought out by Jaleco who ultimately didn't spend any money on upkeep, administration or innovation in the game and it was dying from apathy and neglect.
Evernight was finally purchased from Jaleco and saved from certain demise by a small group of players in April of 2004. The players formed a small company (Evernight, LLC) to administer the game. As of this writing (April 2005), the game continues to thrive.
