Grand Coteau, Louisiana

Grand Coteau is a town located in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,040.

Grand Coteau is on Interstate 49 south of Opelousas, Louisiana

The town is a center for local farming.

As of 2004, the mayor is Jean Coco.

History

The first known land grant at Grand Coteau by the colonial Louisiana government was in 1776.

The Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau was established here in 1821.

In the 19th century the population of Grand Coteau grew with Acadian, Creole French, Irish, and German immigrants. The town retains examples of Victorian architecture from its mid-19th century boom.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.3 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.3 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,040 people, 377 households, and 260 families residing in the town. The population density is 164.6/km² (427.1/mi²). There are 407 housing units at an average density of 64.4/km² (167.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 30.77% White, 67.69% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 377 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% are married couples living together, 24.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.32.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $19,943, and the median income for a family is $26,528. Males have a median income of $21,992 versus $16,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $9,728. 29.2% of the population and 25.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.6% of those under the age of 18 and 19.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
