History

Greenville is an old mill town, which originally split from Mason as Mason Village. The Souhegon river wends its way through downtown from New Ipswich and once powered the mills which still stand, now used for other businesses and storage. Greenville once had a railroad trestle, which was visible from every part of town. Before it was removed for safety reasons, the local residents turned out on a cool wet morning to watch Bronson Potter (a Mason Resident and inventor) fly a private airplane underneath it, on a bet. It is widely rumored that he had to "remove a foot from one wing, and bend the other one up a little bit" to fit through. The railroad depot, which still stands, was once an important landmark that literally put the tiny towns Mason and Greenville "on the map" in New Hampshire.
