Hancock County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 6,786. Its county seat is Sneedville6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 579 km² (224 mi²). 576 km² (222 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.54% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,786 people, 2,769 households, and 1,938 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (30/mi²). There are 3,280 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.91% White, 0.49% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,769 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $19,760, and the median income for a family is $25,372. Males have a median income of $23,150 versus $18,199 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,986. 29.40% of the population and 25.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.50% of those under the age of 18 and 30.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
