Harrison Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

Harrison Township is a census-designated place and township located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 10,934.

Geography

Harrison Township is located at 40°37'36" North, 79°43'29" West (40.626826, -79.724797)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 20.0 km² (7.7 mi²). 18.8 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.95% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,934 people, 4,796 households, and 3,126 families residing in the township. The population density is 580.7/km² (1,503.6/mi²). There are 5,246 housing units at an average density of 278.6/km² (721.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 94.81% White, 3.69% Black or African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,796 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 13.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 31.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the township the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $33,482, and the median income for a family is $42,309. Males have a median income of $36,743 versus $22,111 for females. The per capita income for the township is $18,011. 11.4% of the population and 9.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
