Hayward (city), Wisconsin

Hayward is a city located in Sawyer County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,129. The city is located near the Town of Hayward.

Hayward is a popular fishing destination due to the many lakes in the area. Hayward is the home of the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. The dominant feature of the town is the 200 foot tall statue of a muskie. One can climb up into the mouth of the fish and look over the town.

Hayward is the site of many festivals and events. The annual Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival is the largest gathering of off-road mountain bike riders in the world. Participants in the annual Lumberjack World Championships compete in a variety of lumberjack games such as logrolling, chopping, sawing, and chainsaw events.

Hayward is the finish point of the American Birkebeiner cross-country skiing race.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.48% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,129 people, 960 households, and 529 families residing in the city. The population density is 276.8/km² (717.2/mi²). There are 1,064 housing units at an average density of 138.3/km² (358.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.62% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 8.08% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 960 households out of which 26.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.8% are non-families. 39.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,421, and the median income for a family is $36,287. Males have a median income of $30,174 versus $20,769 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,658. 14.5% of the population and 10.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
