Holbrook is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 10,785.

History

Holbrook was first settled in 1710 and was officially incorporated in 1872. Holbrook is the only town in the United States to be founded on a leap day (February 29).

Geography

Holbrook is located at 42°8'54" North, 71°0'37" West (42.148351, -71.010375)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.2 km² (7.4 mi²). 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.67% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,785 people, 4,076 households, and 2,853 families residing in the town. The population density is 566.5/km² (1,466.7/mi²). There are 4,153 housing units at an average density of 218.2/km² (564.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.87% White, 3.99% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,076 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $54,419, and the median income for a family is $62,532. Males have a median income of $43,134 versus $35,305 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,379. 6.4% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
