Hopewell Township is a township located in Mercer County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 16,105.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 151.9 km² (58.7 mi²). 150.5 km² (58.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.
Hopewell Township borders Ewing Township, Lawrence Township, Princeton Township, Hunterdon County, Somerset County, and the Delaware River.
Pennington Borough and Hopewell Borough are both independent municipalities located entirely within the boundaries of Hopewell Township.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,105 people, 5,498 households, and 4,431 families residing in the township. The population density is 107.0/km² (277.1/mi²). There are 5,629 housing units at an average density of 37.4/km² (96.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 88.30% White, 5.83% African American, 0.12% Native American, 3.97% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 2.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,498 households out of which 40.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.6% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% are non-families. 16.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.11.
In the township the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 103.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.3 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $93,640, and the median income for a family is $101,579. Males have a median income of $66,849 versus $47,701 for females.
