Howland (CDP), Maine

Howland CDP is a census-designated place within the town of Howland in Penobscot County, Maine. The CDP describes the more densely populated central settlement of the town. All the values in this article are also included in the aggregate values for the town as a whole. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,210.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the sttlement has a total area of 20.3 km² (7.8 mi²). 19.4 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,210 people, 500 households, and 322 families residing in the central settlement. The population density is 62.3/km² (161.4/mi²). There are 544 housing units at an average density of 28.0 persons/km² (72.6 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.26% White, 0.25% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 500 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.4% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.87.

Within the CDP the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.7 males.

The median income for a household is $28,261, and the median income for a family is $36,250. Males have a median income of $32,333 versus $19,792 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,875. 11.5% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.7% are under the age of 18 and 25.6% are 65 or older.
