Indian Wells, California

Indian Wells is a city located in Riverside County, California, in the Palm Springs area, in between Palm Desert and La Quinta. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,816.

It also has the highest rate of millionaires per capita of any city in the United States.

Indian Wells is the host of the Indian Wells Masters (also known by its current sponsorship name of Pacific Life Open), one of the nine tournaments in the Tennis Masters Series of high-level events operated by the Association of Tennis Professionals (i.e., the men's tennis tour).

Geography

Indian Wells is located at 33°42'57" North, 116°20'28" West (33.715755, -116.341109)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.7 km² (13.4 mi²). 34.3 km² (13.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.19% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,816 people, 1,982 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density is 111.4/km² (288.5/mi²). There are 3,843 housing units at an average density of 112.2/km² (290.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.33% White, 1.49% Asian, 0.39% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 2.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,982 households out of which 8.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.1% are married couples living together, 3.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.93 and the average family size is 2.28.

The age distribution is 7.6% under the age of 18, 1.5% from 18 to 24, 9.4% from 25 to 44, 35.3% from 45 to 64, and 46.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 63 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $93,986, and the median income for a family is $119,110. Males have a median income of $88,709 versus $49,539 for females. The per capita income for the city is $76,187. 3.4% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 2.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
