Ivybridge

Template:GBdot Ivybridge is a town in the South Hams area of Devon, England. It gained its name for a 13th century hump-backed bridge over the River Erme and is on the southern extremity of Dartmoor, overlooked by Pen Beacon. In the 2001 census Ivybridge had a population of over 12,000 and is among the fastest growing towns in Europe.
Not formally recognised as a town until 1977, Ivybridge originally grew as a staging post on the Exeter to Plymouth road, which became the A38, though this now bypasses the town to the south as a dual carriageway trunk road. Ivybridge is now largely a dormitory town for Plymouth; its railway station was reopened (on a new site) in the 1990s, in order to provide commuter services into Plymouth.
Ivybridge has a successful secondary school; Ivybridge Community College [1] (http://www.ivybridge.devon.sch.uk) that excels both within the national curriculum and extra-curricularly, notably in sporting performance in which it has also has a specialist school status and provides importance services to the local community. The headmaster of Ivybridge Community College, Geoffrey Rees, was created a CBE in the 2003 New Year's Honours List in recognition of his work at the school.
Ivybridge was twinned with the Normandy town St Pierre sur Dives on June 26, 1972.
