Kingston, Massachusetts

Kingston is a town located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,780.

History

Originally the north precinct of the town of Plymouth, Kingston was first settled in 1620 and was officially incorporated as a distinct town in 1726 following a tax dispute between the residents of north and south Plymouth. Kingston is home of the longest continuously run boat yard in North America. The Revolutionary War era brig (tall ship) "Independance" was built by Kingston ship builders.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 52.8 km² (20.4 mi²). 48.0 km² (18.5 mi²) of it is land and 4.8 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.12% water. The Jones River source and mouth are both in Kingston.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,780 people, 4,248 households, and 3,139 families residing in the town. The population density is 245.5/km² (635.7/mi²). There are 4,525 housing units at an average density of 94.3/km² (244.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.00% White, 0.96% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,248 households out of which 38.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $53,780, and the median income for a family is $65,101. Males have a median income of $48,423 versus $29,516 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,370. 5.8% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.9% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
