Leaether Strip is a Danish musical project whose influence has been most felt in the Electronic body music, Industrial music, and Gothic music genres. It was one of the earliest and most prominent acts on Germany’s now defunct Zoth Ommog record label, and has also released music on the American Cleopatra Records and Metropolis Records labels, as well as Germany’s Bloodline Records.
Members / History
According to founder Claus Larsen, Leaether Strip is, and will always be, him. Larsen first released music under the name of Leaether Strip in 1989, but it is unknown whether the inception of the band came earlier. His late 90’s release, Yes, I’m Limited Vol. 3 includes two early demos, at 1982 and 1984 respectively, but it is possible these songs were released under the Leaether Strip moniker ex post facto.
It can be argued, and is by many, that the sound of Leaether Strip throughout the early 90’s helped defined what is today known as newer EBM. Halfway throughout his career, Larsen drastically changed the sound of Leaether Strip, with the release of a synthetic classical album, Serenade for the Dead. The releases since then have reincorporated electronic dance elements, and have redefined Leaether Strip into what Larsen calls, “symphonic electro”.
Larsen seems to have remained silent since the release of his single Carry Me, and the website which once contained a wealth of information regarding the project is no longer online. In what may have been an attempt at foreshadowing his return to music, Larsen's remix of the band KiEw's song Graograman on the Diskette EP (released in 2003) states at the beginning of the song, in a sing-song computer-generated voice, "Leaetherstrip will return for more electronic mayhem."
