Leota (CDP), Minnesota

Leota CDP is a census-designated place (CDP) located within Leota Township of Nobles County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 230.

The United States Census Bureau uses the CDP as a mechanism to provide additional demographic detail for the more densely populated central settlement of the township. The area and population of the CDP are included in the aggregate values reported for the township. See: Leota Township, Minnesota.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census, the settlement has a total area of 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 230 people, 113 households, and 76 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 65.3/km² (169.0/mi²). There are 122 housing units at an average density of 34.6/km² (89.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 100.00% White. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 113 households out of which 17.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% are married couples living together, 1.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.04 and the average family size is 2.52.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 15.7% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 17.0% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 38.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 58 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.5 males.

The median income for a household is $30,568, and the median income for a family is $35,625. Males have a median income of $27,019 versus $30,714 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $15,664. 8.5% of the population and 10.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.0% of those under the age of 18 and 16.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
