The Mad Hatter is a fictional character, one of the many foes of Batman in DC Comics.
The Mad Hatter's real name is Dr. Jervis Tetch, a specialist in neuroscience whose experiments with mind-controlling computer chips in rats soon graduated to human subjects. Tetch modelled his criminal persona after the Mad Hatter, the eccentric top-hatted host of the bizarre tea party in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Tetch began his criminal career by attempting to kill the boyfriend of his research assistant and unrequited love, Alice. Once he had them both under his spell, he was going to make the boyfriend commit suicide and manipulate Alice's mind so as to be his completely obedient, blindly adoring wife. Batman foiled his plans, earning Tetch's everlasting hatred. His failure to win Alice, coupled with the end of his career now that he'd been arrested, sent him over the edge and turned his Mad Hatter fixation completely pathological; he is now confined to Arkham Asylum.
In the Batman television series of the 1960s, David Wayne played the chapeaued charlatan in episodes #13 ("The Thirteenth Hat") and #69 ("The Contaminated Cowl"). In Batman: The Animated Series, he was voiced by Roddy McDowall.
