Madisonville, Kentucky

Madisonville is a city located in Hopkins County, Kentucky of the Western Coal Field region (http://www.uky.edu/KGS/coal/webgeoky/pages/regionwestern.html). As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,307. It is the county seat of Hopkins CountyTemplate:GR.

The city was named in honor of U.S. President James Madison.

Madisonville is a commercial center of the region with shopping, dining, and entertainment. The Madisonville area is the home to two shopping malls, two multiplex movie theaters, many fine casual dining establishments.

Madisonville and Hopkins County is a home to industry as well. General Electric Aircraft Engines, Autoliv, Period Furniture (a division of KI Furniture), GlitterWrap, and Carhartt and others all have operations in the Madisonville area.

Madisonville and most of Hopkins County is in the Hopkins County School District. Hopkins County Schools contains eight elementary school, four middle school, and two high school sub-districts. Dawson Springs is under the Dawson Springs Independent School District. Madisonville also has a Community College and Technical School and is within a short drive of several four year colleges and universities in Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee.

Madisonville is located at 37°19'58" North, 87°30'8" West (37.332660, -87.502190)Template:GR, some 125 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 48.0 km² (18.5 mi²). 46.1 km² (17.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.94% water.

It is at an altitude of 460 feet above sea level.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 19,307 people, 8,077 households, and 5,330 families residing in the city. The population density is 418.8/km² (1,085.0/mi²). There are 8,889 housing units at an average density of 192.8/km² (499.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.21% White, 11.24% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,077 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,097, and the median income for a family is $38,688. Males have a median income of $32,064 versus $20,940 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,381. 16.4% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Government

Madisonville is the county seat of the Hopkins County area. The incumbent mayor is Karen Cunningham (Since late 1990's).
