Max Burns

Max Burns (born November 8 1948), American politician, was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 2003 to 2005, representing the 12th District of Georgia. Unlike most current and recent Representatives, he served only one term, which expired on January 3, 2005.
He was born in Millen, Georgia, was educated at Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University (Ph.D.) and served in the United States Army Reserve. He just barely defeated Charles "Champ" Walker, Jr. to win election in November 2002.
The 12th District was a new district, created because Georgia had gained population according to the 2000 census. The district had been gerrymandered for a Democratic victory; Burns won because of ethical clouds over the 2002 Democratic nominee. Burns was considered extremely vulnerable in the 2004 U.S. House election. His 2004 Democratic opponent was Athens City Commissioner John Barrow, who beat Burns 52% to 48%.
