Mercer County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 120,293. Its county seat is Mercer6.

Mercer County was also known as the Sharon MSA by the U.S. Census Bureau until the 2000 census, when it was appended to the Youngstown-Warren MSA.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,768 km² (683 mi²). 1,740 km² (672 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.58% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 120,293 people, 46,712 households, and 32,371 families residing in the county. The population density is 69/km² (179/mi²). There are 49,859 housing units at an average density of 29/km² (74/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.13% White, 5.25% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 46,712 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.80 males.
