History

The University of South Carolina put fourth efforts to open a school of commerce as early as 1914. The school was founded in 1919 and under the leadership of dean George Olson was firmly established by the early 1920s.

During the 1980s the school pioneered in the field of International Business and established itself as one of the national leaders in that area. The initial graduate program MIBS was highly regarded and garnered continuously high rankings. In 2002 the program was restructured and is now called IMBA. The program works in close cooperation with the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration in Austria.

The school also started offering a specialization in international business for undergraduate students. Starting with 2002-03 academic year the program became an official major.

In the late 1990s, Wall Street financier and USC graduate Darla Moore donated $25 million to the business school. In her honor the school was renamed Darla Moore School of Business. The first name was dropped shortly thereafter and the school is now officially called The Moore School of Business.

In 2001 Joel A. Smith III, a former Bank of America Executive was appointed to be the dean of the MSB.

Today approximately 3,000 students learn at the MSB, making it the second biggest college at the University of South Carolina. Over 2,500 are enrolled in undergraduate programs and almost 500 students are working on their graduate degree.

On April 23, 2004 the Business School announced another gift by Darla Moore. She donated $45 million with the challenge to the University to match that sum. The funds are dedicated to a complete renovation of the Hipp-Close building and to increase the school's endowment.
