Oswego (town), New York

Oswego is a town located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,287.

The Town of Oswego was established in 1818 from the Town of Hannibal and is on the western border of the county. The incorporation of the Village of Oswego as the City of Oswego in 1848 removed a portion of the town.

Geography

Lake Ontario and the Oswego River help define the town's borders. The west town line is the border of Cayuga County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 76.0 km² (29.3 mi²). 71.0 km² (27.4 mi²) of it is land and 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.54% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,287 people, 1,734 households, and 1,255 families residing in the town. The population density is 102.6/km² (265.8/mi²). There are 1,904 housing units at an average density of 26.8 persons/km² (69.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.00% White, 2.46% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 2.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,734 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 27.6% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 16.4% under the age of 18, 41.9% from 18 to 24, 18.1% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $49,883, and the median income for a family is $61,648. Males have a median income of $47,051 versus $25,833 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,835. 7.8% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.6% are under the age of 18 and 10.6% are 65 or older.
