Palos Verdes Estates, California

Palos Verdes Estates is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, USA on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It was designed by the noted American landscape architect and planner Frederick Law Olmsted. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,340. According to the 2000 US Census, Palos Verdes Estates is the 81st richest place in the United States with at least 1,000 households (based upon per capita income).

The city faces the Pacific Ocean, and there are several accessible beaches although most of the shoreline is marked by high cliffs. The city is mainly residential, with no traffic lights and relatively limited commercial areas around Malaga Cove and Lunada Bay. One of Southern California's most expensive neighborhoods, Palos Verdes Estates' aesthetics and architecture are protected by an Art Jury, a non-governmental organization which must approve any exterior alteration to any building, fence, sidewalk, or other structure. The city was incorporated in 1939, and the area around Malaga Cove has most of the Peninsula's earlier buildings.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²). 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 13,340 people, 4,993 households, and 4,119 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,075.3/km² (2,784.9/mi²). There are 5,202 housing units at an average density of 419.3/km² (1,086.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.32% White, 0.99% African American, 0.13% Native American, 17.14% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,993 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.7% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% are non-families. 15.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 19.8% from 25 to 44, 33.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $123,534, and the median income for a family is $133,563. The per capita income for the city is $69,040. 2.2% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.5% of those under the age of 18 and 1.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
