Pemberton Township is a township located in Burlington County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 28,691. Pemberton Township is governed under the Faulkner Act (Mayor-Council) system of municipal government.

Pemberton Township is the location of the home campus of Burlington County College, the countys community college. On the campus is Lewis M. Parker Center, named after the 1st chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 161.8 km² (62.5 mi²). 159.8 km² (61.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.31% water.

Pemberton Township borders New Hanover Township, Wrightstown, Springfield Township, Eastampton Township, Southampton Township, Woodland Township, and Ocean County

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,691 people, 10,050 households, and 7,487 families residing in the township. The population density is 179.6/km² (465.2/mi²). There are 10,778 housing units at an average density of 67.5/km² (174.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 66.03% White, 23.12% African American, 0.46% Native American, 3.18% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 2.89% from other races, and 4.24% from two or more races. 8.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,050 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 15.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the township the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $47,394, and the median income for a family is $52,860. Males have a median income of $36,572 versus $26,689 for females. The per capita income for the township is $19,238. 9.3% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
