Pipestone is a city located in Pipestone County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,280. It is the county seat of Pipestone County6.

The city is also the location of the Pipestone National Monument.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,280 people, 1,900 households, and 1,138 families residing in the city. The population density is 421.6/km² (1,090.8/mi²). There are 2,097 housing units at an average density of 206.5/km² (534.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.23% White, 0.28% African American, 2.94% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,900 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 35.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,412, and the median income for a family is $40,194. Males have a median income of $28,180 versus $21,349 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,253. 9.7% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
