Portrush

Portrush (Port Rois in Irish) is a town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, beside the border with County Londonderry. Rois is the Irish word for headland and the main part of the old town, including the railway station, most hotels, restaurants and bars, is built on a peninsula pointing north-northwest.

Attractions in the seaside resort, next to Portstewart, include the famous (at least in Northern Ireland) Barry's Amusements, Portrush Countryside Centre (http://www.ehsni.gov.uk/places/parks/portrush.shtml), the Dunluce Centre (http://www.dunlucecentre.co.uk/) and a swimming complex. Also in the town is the renowned Royal Portrush Golf Club which hosted the 1951 British Open Golf championship. There are sandy beaches to the east and west.

It is the base for the Katie Hannon, a Severn class lifeboat and Ken and Mary, a D class inshore lifeboat of the RNLI. Lifeboats have operated out of Portrush Harbour since 1860. For more information see the RNLI (http://www.rnli.org.uk/) web site.

In August 1976, the Irish Republican Army carried out six bomb attacks in the town, which destroyed several buildings - including parts of the main street - but caused no deaths, thanks to telephoned warnings.

In the off-season, Portrush is a dormitory town for the nearby campus of the University of Ulster at Coleraine, although Portstewart is a more popular place for student accommodation.

Portrush is home to some varied groups, I will highlight the yong people that seem to gravitate there. We have the surfers, who seem to get on with the skaters, who don't much like to spides or the tourists. The toursits like to watch the surfers and the skaters, the spides just like to drink cider and start fights. The surfers are known to finish fights. Some of the spides are tourists, and some of the surfers are toursits, but rarely do you get a skater who is a tourist, or maybe they dont skate when they are here. Apart from this there are the elderly who dissaprove of the surfers, skaters and spides. The spides try to intimidate the elderly as some form of entertainment. Portrush is not a place for normal people, it is a scientific experiment to see what happens when you take all hope and potential out of young people. Despite all this it is a place I recommend you visit but dont stay too long..
