Rose was a modern tall ship, built at Lunenberg, Nova Scotia in 1970. She was a replica of HMS Rose, a sixth-rate frigate built in 1757.
Rose was inspected and certified by the United States Coast Guard and operated as a sail training vessel in the 1980s and 1990s, run by the HMS Rose Foundation based in Bridgeport, CT. She was sold to the 20th Century Fox film studio in 2001 to be used in the making of the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, in which she played the fictional Royal Navy frigate Surprise. After the film was complete, the ship was given to the San Diego Maritime Museum who have renamed her the Surprise and plan on restoring her to her former glory.
