Rouses Point is a village located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,277.

The Village of Rouses Point is in northeast part of the Town of Champlain. The village is located on US Route 2 and US Route 11

Geography

Rouses Point is located at 44°59'15" North, 73°22'3" West (44.987531, -73.367634)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²). 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.09% water.

Rouses Point is a port of entry from Canada and is close to the border with Quebec. The village is on the west shore of Lake Champlain.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,277 people, 978 households, and 604 families residing in the village. The population density is 493.9/km² (1,281.8/mi²). There are 1,062 housing units at an average density of 230.4/km² (597.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.19% White, 0.70% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 1.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 978 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the village the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $39,167, and the median income for a family is $49,931. Males have a median income of $36,250 versus $30,064 for females. The per capita income for the village is $20,539. 9.9% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Local Information

There is one elementary school in Rouses Point housing grades K-5. Students from grades 6-12 attend Northeastern Clinton Central Middle/High School in the Town of Champlain. Dodge Memorial Library is located on Lake Street (Route 9B/US 11). Also found on Lake Street is the Rouses Point Recreation Center, which houses village council meetings, an ice rink, and from time to time serves as a small convention floor.
