Saluda, South Carolina

Saluda is a town located in Saluda County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,066. It is the county seat of Saluda CountyTemplate:GR.

Saluda is located at 34°0'11" North, 81°46'18" West (34.003131, -81.771691)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.5 km² (3.3 mi²). 8.4 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.22% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,066 people, 1,103 households, and 788 families residing in the town. The population density is 365.4/km² (947.1/mi²). There are 1,211 housing units at an average density of 144.3/km² (374.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 48.76% White, 40.48% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 9.95% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 19.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,103 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% are married couples living together, 24.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.21.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,964, and the median income for a family is $31,042. Males have a median income of $25,208 versus $19,921 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,032. 28.5% of the population and 22.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.4% of those under the age of 18 and 18.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
