Schoharie (town), New York

Schoharie is a town located in Schoharie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,299.

The Town of Schoharie has a village, also called Schoharie. The town is on the east border of the county.

Geography

Part of the northeast town line is the border of Schenectady County, New York. Interstate 88 crosses the north part of the town. The Schoharie Creek flows north out of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 77.6 km² (30.0 mi²). 77.2 km² (29.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,299 people, 1,314 households, and 883 families residing in the town. The population density is 42.7/km² (110.7/mi²). There are 1,435 housing units at an average density of 18.6/km² (48.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.30% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,314 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,576, and the median income for a family is $50,000. Males have a median income of $31,737 versus $25,603 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,676. 6.1% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
