Singlestick

Singlestick is a martial art related to fencing, and a weapon for the art, bearing approximately the same relationship to the broadsword as the foil to the rapier in being a sporting version of the weapon for safe practice. The singlestick itself is a wooden rod, traditionally ash, about three feet long and one inch in diameter, with a basket hilt. The modern target area is the upper body, with the exception of the back of the head, and the upper part of the forward leg; historically, the target area has varied, with bouts sometimes only being decided by the drawing of blood from the head of one of the contestants, ala the Mensur.
In 1904 there was a singlestick event in the Olympics, but the sport was already in decline and has now largely - although not entirely - fallen out of practice.
