Soda Springs is a city located in Caribou County, Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,381. The city is the county seat of Caribou CountyTemplate:GR. The city is named for the thousands of natural springs of carbonated water that are located in and around the city. The springs were well-known to Native Americans and were a famous landmark aloong the Oregon Trail in the middle 19th century. Today the city is also known as the location of the Soda Springs Geyser, a man-made "geyser".

Soda Springs is located at 42°39'29" North, 111°35'46" West (42.658011, -111.596107)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,381 people, 1,210 households, and 905 families residing in the city. The population density is 288.2/km² (747.1/mi²). There are 1,505 housing units at an average density of 128.3/km² (332.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.63% White, 0.03% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 1.18% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 2.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,210 households out of which 40.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.1% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $40,690, and the median income for a family is $46,152. Males have a median income of $41,979 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,729. 9.3% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
