Sodus is a town located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,949.
The Town of Sodus was formed in 1789 and contains a village named Sodus. The town is on the north border of the county.
Geography
The north border is Lake Ontario.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 179.6 km² (69.4 mi²). 174.6 km² (67.4 mi²) of it is land and 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.78% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,949 people, 3,436 households, and 2,388 families residing in the town. The population density is 51.2/km² (132.7/mi²). There are 4,195 housing units at an average density of 24.0/km² (62.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.79% White, 8.38% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. 2.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,436 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males.
