South Taft is a census-designated place located in Kern County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,898.

Geography

South Taft is located at 35°7'57" North, 119°27'29" West (35.132373, -119.457959)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,898 people, 629 households, and 471 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 684.9/km² (1,766.2/mi²). There are 724 housing units at an average density of 261.3/km² (673.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 79.14% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 1.95% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.79% Pacific Islander, 13.96% from other races, and 3.69% from two or more races. 25.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 629 households out of which 41.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 18.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% are non-families. 20.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.39.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 35.1% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 104.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $20,921, and the median income for a family is $23,317. Males have a median income of $28,889 versus $24,635 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $9,929. 39.5% of the population and 29.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 61.7% of those under the age of 18 and 21.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
