Sweetwater County is a county located in the state of Wyoming. As of 2000, the population is 37,613. Its county seat is Green River6.

History

Sweetwater County was organized in 1867.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 27,172 km² (10,491 mi²). 27,001 km² (10,425 mi²) of it is land and 171 km² (66 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.63% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 37,613 people, 14,105 households, and 10,099 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 15,921 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.62% White, 0.73% Black or African American, 1.01% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.59% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. 9.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,105 households out of which 38.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.90% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 8.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 102.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,537, and the median income for a family is $54,173. Males have a median income of $45,678 versus $22,440 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,575. 7.80% of the population and 5.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.20% of those under the age of 18 and 7.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
