Taylorville is a city located in Christian County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,427. It is the county seat of Christian CountyTemplate:GR.

Taylorville is located at 39°32'27" North, 89°17'17" West (39.540768, -89.288005)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.0 km² (10.0 mi²). 20.9 km² (8.1 mi²) of it is land and 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.46% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,427 people, 4,856 households, and 3,039 families residing in the city. The population density is 546.7/km² (1,416.6/mi²). There are 5,208 housing units at an average density of 249.2/km² (645.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.67% White, 0.71% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,856 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% are non-families. 32.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,235, and the median income for a family is $43,223. Males have a median income of $35,655 versus $23,647 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,162. 10.1% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Taylorville is known to many as having a high rate of neuroblastoma, a cancer affecting the brain and striking children. The local power company was sued and lost for contaminating the groundwater in 1994.
