Tisbury is a town located on Martha's Vineyard in Dukes County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,755.

Vineyard Haven is the main village/town center of Tisbury. The names are often used interchangeably. For geographic and demographic information on the village of Vineyard Haven, please see the article Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts.

History

Tisbury was first settled in 1660 and was officially incorporated in 1671.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.6 km² (19.2 mi²). 17.0 km² (6.6 mi²) of it is land and 32.6 km² (12.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 65.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,755 people, 1,646 households, and 902 families residing in the town. The population density is 221.0/km² (572.4/mi²). There are 2,720 housing units at an average density of 160.1/km² (414.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.04% White, 2.96% African American, 1.36% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.33% from other races, and 3.94% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,646 households out of which 25.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.2% are non-families. 36.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,041, and the median income for a family is $53,051. Males have a median income of $38,452 versus $29,034 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,783. 12.2% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Tisbury is the main port of entrance to Martha's Vineyard. The main ferry line is the Steamship Authority, which runs to Wood's Hole, Massachusetts. There are several other private ferry lines that serve Martha's Vineyard.

Tisbury is the year-around town on the Vineyard - it is where most stores will be found open in the non tourist times.
