The University of Okoboji is a fictional university that is the subject of a long-standing joke in the state of Iowa in the United States.
The fictional university was the creation of three brothers and a group of friends in the early 1970s, who printed t-shirts with an "official" school crest. The word "Okoboji" refers to several lakes, and to the town of Okoboji, in the Iowa Great Lakes region that are popular destination for sport fishing.
Attendance or alumnihood in the "University of Okoboji" is often meant to indicate that a person did not otherwise attend a real institution of higher learning.
Claimed alumnihood in the university is often a matter of somewhat perverse pride. It is common among those claiming alumnihood to flout such university decor such as car decals and t-shirts without informing unsuspecting out-of-staters that the university is fictional. The name is now used in connection with several annual fund-raising events for charity, including bike rides, a marathon, and a winter games competition.
Even the local radio station has taken up the joke. Its call letters are KUOO and it refers to itself as "campus radio".
