• ad hoc?

Isn't that what the wiki is all about, creating and refining new wordings of verifiable definitions via the group editing process? Clearly we can't just cut and paste from outside references, particularly when their not open source. I really think we aught to simply accept that we have a difference of opinion on this talk:racism thing, and leave the article in a NPOV enough state for the reader to understand that some people use the term differently than others. Honestly, I think the intro looks pretty good at the moment. I've extended the same suggestion to pir, that we agree to disagree, and move on, leaving the article fair and balanced. Sam [Spade (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Sam_Spade&action=edit&section=new)] 11:57, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi Sam -- I've left a message on Talk:Racism as well. Since there is clearly not agreement on the definition of racism, it seems very reasonable and NPOV (IMHO) to use a major dictionary's current full definition at the beginning, rather than a slight paraphrasing of the same dictionary's definition from 78 years ago (cf. our previous discussion). I propose leaving the 2002 Webster's definition until we can reach agreement about a definition. I added in the part that VV finds POV months ago (and I must note that most African Americans agree with the definition as I had left it, so it's definitely not a "native/non-native speaker" divide, BTW), so clearly the Webster's definition isn't my idea of what racism is, so I hope that all can see this as a compromise. Thanks, BCorr|Брайен 14:39, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Of course not, in what way is that any sort of compromise whatsoever? Also, how would you know what most african americans think? Do you know any? Do you have a cite? I am a poll buff, and know dozens of african americans personally, and I don't go around claiming to know what most afro-americans think. Also, even if you were correct, what possible difference would it make (regarding the definition of the word) what most african americans thought? Would that make it correct? It would make a potentially noteworthy cited factoid, but that is all. Sam [Spade (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Sam_Spade&action=edit&section=new)] 14:45, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
(oh, and p.s. thats alot of spam, next time use a Hyperlink instead, will ya?) Sam [Spade (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Sam_Spade&action=edit&section=new)] 14:49, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I'm sorry Sam -- I accidentally deleted a lot of this last night when I did a formatting edit from my PDA and didn't realize this was all in one section (since my PDA truncates anything over 255 characters).
My short and final answer here to the questions you raised above (since I've already addressed most of this on Talk:Racism) is: I'm an "afro american" (as you refer to us) myself, and yes, I know a many, many others, and yes, I've provided citations that you've deemed unimportant, including the latest edition of Webster's, so I'm not going to argue the points again as it seems fruitless to do so here on my talk page.
And, BTW, I've noticed your latest candidacy for becoming an admin -- I hope that you are able to gain insight from how people react and not simply looking "for the usual suspects to sound off about how their inability to cope w the group editing process is compounded by their poor social skills" as you said on your talk page. Seeing that you are so deeply committed to such cynical views of the community saddens me.
Sincerely, BCorr|Брайен 12:37, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Wow, thanx for bringing that to my attentions, I had no clue I was up for election, hehe~! I made some choice comments Re: that, which I'm sure you'll find delightful. My opinion of the community here is that it is diverse. There are many, many good people here, and the wiki is a wonderful resource and hobby for me. That said, I have met more obnoxious people possessed of obscene and ludicrous opinions here than I have anywhere else. The fact that a certain handful of them have decided to ride about on my coat tails creates a cynical impression within me of humanity (at least online humanity), not of the project.

As far as how I refer to "you guys" I usually call you American, for allot of reasons (which I'd be happy to explain sometime if you'd like, it boils down to me thinking you likely have more in common culturally, ethnically, even genetically w say me, than you do w some guy in Africa, or a "British African", etc...). I only say "afro-American" or whatever for the sake of amusement (are their "crewcut-americans" too? if so I am one ;) and because it seemed the polite/PC thing to do. As fun as your ethnic heritage might be to talk about, it doesn't give you any special status (at least not w me), nor ability to speak for your community. Chris Rock has a special status in the American community, and I'd say he speaks for many (if not most of us) when he states, "Black people are more racist than white people", an insightful comment indeed. He is a citable source of info, unlike our fine selves. Also, no matter what he, or a poll, or a majority of such-and-such Americans say or think, heck, no matter what websterIV decides to say, the definition of terms is based on consensus. When distinctly divergent definitions occur (as they do between you {a handful of far leftists I have experienced pretty much only online} and everyone else I have ever met, we provide both definitions, with a verifiable explanation of who uses them, how and why. That’s NPOV. Copy pasting a particular dic-def on top of my ad-hoc one is not what I call a compromise. Frankly, I think we may need to bring in the community w some "neutrality disputed" and "page in need of assistance" flags if this foolishness keeps up. I've been debating w you folks about this for over a month now, w essentially no progress. My position isn't going to change, and I don't intend to keep debating w you about this until Webster decides to write the dictionary the way you want him to ;) Cheers, Sam [Spade (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Sam_Spade&action=edit&section=new)] 13:48, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

• Editing User:Mike Church

Why did you revert my edit on User:Mike Church? It was a proper edit. --John Kerry + John Edwards 2004 00:18, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi Alex -- it's because none of us should edit other people's user pages in general -- but especially in this case since Mike has (mostly) left and has been pretty difficult for many of us to deal with and is very sensitive to feeling persecuted. You might also not that just a few minutes ago (20:08 EDT, 3 Oct 2004) I reverted a change to User:AlexPlank that outed you here (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User:AlexPlank&diff=0&oldid=6320910) for the same basic reason.

• Thank you for your advise about mediation of JW, but...

Thank you for your advise, but I think edit wars about first sentence of this article has started. Trinitarians will never accept that Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians, and I won't concede them, because I think it's a lebel to JW. Do Wikipedia have guidelines about minor religions? I think only NPOV guidline has disadvantage for minor religions that are spoken evil of like JW, because many Wikipedians belong to major religions, and they contribute in their views. Well, better face the fact that I just would not have any time for it even if I were asked to help, which I am not :-) It is like the huge number of inactive sysops :-) You may transform it to list "inactif MC" and "active MC" and "away MC" if you think it less abrupt. Except that I do not consider myself away in any sense, just not having the time ... But if the chair ever thinks I may be useful, do not hesitate anyway.

I thought of what you said. I would have something to ask you later in this week. Thanks :-) SweetLittleFluffyThing

• RfM

I moved the page to a title encompassing both participants. Just a heads up. VeryVerily 22:04, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

PLEASE DON'T DO THAT! User:Bcorr/MCsig 22:08, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Why not? Mediation is not a one-person affair. VeryVerily 22:18, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Because I asked you to. Because it's a case that involves you. Because I want to go home and eat dinner and not have to worry about your changing what I've done in my capacity as chair of the MC. User:Bcorr/MCsig 22:26, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
(It's a case that involved Shorne, and he got to pick the initial title of the section.) Presumably your deeds as chair are not immune to improvement by others - in this case your primary action was creating the subpage, and it seems secondary how you happened to choose a title. My page title is clearly more accurate and reflective, regardless of your dinner plans. And you didn't ask, you screamed. VeryVerily 22:57, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Common sense seays that you shouldn't move a page that is about a conflict that you are a party to. BCorr|Брайен 23:53, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Common sense says the title should reflect the content. VeryVerily 07:35, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
He already has. It was entirely inappropriate. Please move it back. Shorne 22:11, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
He moved it again. Shorne 22:21, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Yes, yes, I know. There's no need to leave me a note each and every time. My watchlist will tell me. BCorr|Брайен 22:26, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

EXPLAIN YOUR ACTIONS! You are way out of line. Protecting the mediation page now? VeryVerily 22:23, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I'm the chair of the MC. You're the subject of a request. If I didn't keep having to deal with edit conflicts, etc., I wouldn't have to take such drastic measures. Stop your actions now or I will be forced to refer this to the AC. User:Bcorr/MCsig 22:26, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
This is a wiki, not a dictatorship. I know of nothing in the mediation policy that entitles you to choose and enforce a page title for mediation request subpages, a title which in this case is clearly one-sided. Since you apparently dislike me since I don't know when for reasons I don't know what, you should probably recuse yourself from further involvement in this case, chair or no. VeryVerily 22:42, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Dictatorship? Bah! That was the title of the request, and if you didn't see fit to change it before I moved the lengthy discussion to a subpage, there seems to be no reason to do it now other than to pick a fight with me. It is perfectly reasonable to keep the name, as it's the same request that he made. And if you had asked (even shouting) I think it would have been no problem. Once again, your unilateralism is your undoing, IMHO. I will be happy to recuse myself from mediating this conflict, but I will continue to carry out my work in managing the size and content of WP:RfM and it's subpages.BCorr|Брайен 23:53, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Because I didn't notice the section title that means that I "agreed" it should be one-sided? What if the section title had been "VeryVerily's vandalism"? I only shouted when you did. And it's a wiki, anyone should change something that needs fixing; I again see no guideline that I need your permission. You seriously think I changed to a fair title "to pick a fight with you"? I even notified you on your talk page as an act of good faith. Apparently that's not something you reciprocate. VeryVerily 07:35, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
This is silly. We both know damned well the page belongs where I put it. Maybe you should get off the power/control thing, acknowledge this, and move on to more productive pursuits. VeryVerily 07:45, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I reject this demand. It would be the height of ignominy for the chairman of the committee to submit to this sort of manipulation. I also cannot believe that you have again changed the name (what is this, the fourth time? the fifth?) in the face of the warning that the matter would be addressed to the AC. Earlier someone could not find the page at all, evidently because you had broken the link. And over an issue of no consequence at that! I do implore you to stop this childish behaviour. Shorne 08:10, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I thank you for your admirable patience in the handling of this unseemly outburst. For the record, I would have had no objection to the two titles favoured by VeryVerily if he had asked rather than asserting that his way was the only right way. At this point, however, I do object to yielding to his preference as a matter of principle, or perhaps I should say child psychology.
I also have no objection to the choice of another mediator, although I'm sure that Bcorr would do a fine job. Indeed, I recommend that another mediator be appointed, for Bcorr has already suffered enough. Shorne 00:22, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit&section=new)| talk)

Asbestosis Compensation and Liability Disputes

Bcorr, I'f you get the chance I'd welcome your input on [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestosis_-_Compensation_and_Liability_Disputes) and the preceeding (now archived) VfD debate archive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Asbestosis_-_Compensation_and_Liability_Disputes) . (There was a bit of a heated debate at the outset, but it seemed to calm down and the community vote decided on keeping a standalone article).

IMHO, the article has undergone reasonable revision (both during the debate itself , and subsequently), and maybe the time would be ripe to reconsider the NPOV and CLEANUP tags. What do you think? Wikityke 23:01, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I suspect he's just one of the many neo-Nazis who have been making pests of themselves lately. (If you haven't heard about the Stormfront campaign against Wikipedia, the mailing list posts which start at [4] (http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2005-February/018989.html) should give a decent overview.) —Charles P. (Mirv) 01:49, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Request page protection for article

Would you page protect the pages below please as Violetriga's unilateral reverting of my adding a balanced view is against policy. It is not allowed to revert such an edit, rather adding the balanced opposing view to an article is good policy. Also Violetriga has abused the 3 revert rule here and also broken the policy of starting an edit war rather than discussion.Kreen

Please read the expanded Elagabalus article

I significantly expanded the Elagabalus in late March and would like to nominate for featured status by the end of April. Since he is rather controversial, I've tried to go out of my way to cite sources and present differing accounts about his rule. It probably still needs some work which is why I'm asking several people to review/edit before it's nominated. I'd appreciate it, having previously edited the article, you would review it and get back to me about what you think. Thanks. -JCarriker 02:59, Apr 8, 2005 (UTC)

Research project on wiki contributors

Hello-

I am aware that this is not the typical message usually posted, so I would like to apologize and ask for your kind understanding. I am a PhD student at Syracuse University School of Information Studies. My advisor and I are working on a research project on contributors to Wikis. This project received Institutional Review Board Approval number 05048. I would like to have a brief email dialog with you about your experience as a Wikipedia contributor. Please respond to this posting or send me an email at wikiresearch@hotmail.com, if you would be willing to answer a couple of quick questions. I would like to assure you that your comments will remain confidential.

Best regards, -Isabelle Fagnot

Possible impostor

I've been doing some impostor hunting lately, and you got the following hits: BCorr (talk • contribs). Of course, this may be nothing, but I thought I would let you know. – ClockworkSoul 02:39, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Possible new mediator and committee chair

Mgm has nominated himself to be a mediator and indicated he's willing to take over as chair. In an effort to help keep the mediation process alive, it would be nice if you could comment on this at Wikipedia:Mediation Committee. --Michael Snow 20:09, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
