Rose-ringed Parakeet

Hi Sundar,

On the german Wikipedia there is a funny linguistic article de:Halsbandsittich in vielen Sprachen (i.e. "Rose-ringed Parakeet in many languages") which compares the word for the Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) in a lot of languages. It seems nobody was sure enough about Tamil to add a Tamil entry in the main table, but someone unearthed the following information:

  1. "kiLLai" is a rather unspecific word used for this parrot
  2. rural Tamils use sometimes a more specific "aarmavizuntakiLi"

Can you confirm or deny these points? Can you give the names in Tamil script?

About article Bihar

I find that the article Bihar has been edited by some one and changed to Bihar (India), and other articles with the same name has been also referred to there. I feel this is not a wise step. The matter requires assistance and discussions so that the article Bihar gets its former name. Please try to do something.--Bhadani 03:47, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

PS- I have posted the following on discussion page of article bihar: quoteThe edits of 17 April 2005 by Hottentot has been reverted by me as already there was a section in the article Bihar – Bihar (disambiguation) and as such there was no justifiable reason to change the main character by the name Bihar. The edits regarding Bihar by Hottentot are being placed in the section Bihar (disambiguation) . Here, it is also pertinent to note that though wikipedia sets its own standard, but even in Enclopaedia Britannica Bihar has been separately dealt with, and in my humble opinion the case with wikipedia should not be different. The article Bihar represents a state of India and 100 million people reside in Bihar and Bihar has a recorded history of 2500 years. In any case, the position of Bihar as a separate article was already accepted by the community of wikipedians as the legend Bihar (disambiguation) was there along with the main article of Bihar.

I trust that the position has been clarified.Unquote

I find this article has again been reverted by Hottentot. Please try to do something. Thanks.--Bhadani 05:00, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

hello, i am from china. my english is not good. in wikipedia, i think the opinions of most of us must be adiaphorous. the indian map has a limitation. you can contrast the maps i upload and the maps previously.--icywind 06:54, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I am on a vacation so I am able to work more on wikipedia, at least for one more week, then I will continue for sure. Map of India

Hi Sundar, I'm having a bit of trouble on Image:Indiastates&utnumbered.png (talk), an NPOV map of India made by User:Nichalp. User:Amitroy5 (talk) keeps on reverting the map to a POV version, and has so far ignored all of my attempts to discuss the map on both his own talk page and the talk page of the image.

If possible, can you help me out on this matter, and try to talk to this guy? Thanks in advance. -- ran (talk) 23:58, Apr 29, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Sundar, Amitroy5 is still reverting the map repeatedly, but he's not engaging in further discussion. What do you think I should do? I'm thinking about putting the page up for RFC. -- ran (talk) 21:49, May 4, 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia

The article was victim to a page-move vandal, and I was trying to delete the redirect in order to move it back. However, due to server slowness, I kept getting error messages, and in the meantime someone beat me to it and moved the real article back to where it belongs. The article still ended up deleted, despite the error messages, and though I tried many times to restore it, it timed out every time. I requested on IRC that someone restore it (and User:Kingturtle did; see [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=delete&user=&page=Wikipedia)), and it seems to be all fixed now. Are aware of an article about "Tamil palm leaf astrology" or something like that on either en.wikipedia or ta.wikipedia? I'm maybe searching for the right title. Name may also be "nadi" or "naadi" in whatever transliteration. Copying to Commons

Hi Sundar,

Thanks for copying my photo Image:30-St-Mary-Axe.jpg over to the Commons. I'll probably get around to moving my other photos eventually, but there is always other stuff that needs doing.

However, when you move images to the Commons, I think you are supposed to copy over the source and attribution info as well. At the moment, the 30-St-Mary-Axe photo is effectively a copyright violation. I'll fix this one, but you might want to check any other images you've moved over.

There's also a template {{NowCommons|Image:NameOnCommons.jpg}} which you can add to the original Image page on En, to indicate that the image has been copied over (I think it also flags that original can be deleted). -- Solipsist 18:27, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

Server load

How does the new template reduce the server load?  =Nichalp (talk • contribs)= 05:13, May 10, 2005 (UTC)

{{subst:foo}} is no usual template. It simply inserts the contents of Template:Tl into the current page at the time of saving the edit and not everytime when someone fetches the page. See User:Xiong/TC for more information. -- Sundar (talk · contributions) 06:00, May 10, 2005 (UTC)

{User} template

Being a computer science person, and having been on the fringes of the Netoholic versus others war about transclusion (I found JamesDay's comments the most useful), I did know most of that already, actually.

Here's why I think it's better not to use subst: on VIP. Basically, we're trading off one kind of overhead (disk space) for another (processing power). That page is very large, and gets updated a lot. Every time anyone makes a minor change (the way versions work at the moment), it makes another copy on disk of the entire page. That uses a lot of disk (and JamesDay and the other developers are busy trying to keep ahead of our disk usage). So by using the template directly, since that page consists mostly of {User} entries, we substantially reduce the page size (and therefore disk usage). On another page, one which was a) small and b) not updated often, the balance would swing the other way. Noel (talk) 16:58, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Sure, no problem. (Now let's hope I made the right call, and that saving disk is more important! :-) Noel (talk) 05:34, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Request for help

Hi, I am trying to rewrite what seems to be a highly controversial article on Lingam. Is there any way to prevent users from making changes before discussing them ?.

Tamil FAC and Tamil wikipedia

I saw your message, and voted for Tamil people as FA. I also took a look at the Tamil article on ta. I made a few suggestions on the talk page, but unfortunately, I will not have the time to properly participate in anything on any wiki until late-September. But congratulations and mikka nanri for reviving ta., and I hope I can be active there when I return. Incidentally, do you know of any browser for Linux that can display Tamil unicode sensibly, so I can actually read what I'm typing? -- Arvind 14:34, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks - I'll be more careful henceforth. We follow different conventions for marking things "minor changes" on nynorsk, and I'm still not quite used to the rules of English wiki. -- Arvind 15:06, 27 May 2005 (UTC)
By the way, I will not be accessing wiki for the next few months, but please feel free to email me through the "E-mail this user" link if you need to contact me. -- Arvind 15:25, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

Tamil cuisine

It's an honor to be asked to enter the Tamil cuisine discussion, and I will try, but I am not sure I can contribute much. If a passionate interest in Indian cuisines is worth anything, I'm your moth, though. Whatever I come up with, I'll put on talk informally, and the person writing the cuisine section can use it or not. That is an already great article (Tamil people) by the way. --Mothperson 13:28, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

Tamil grammar

Well, I did my best at summarizing Tamil grammar so that an adequate summary could be at Tamil language#Grammar. However Tamil grammar is already a fairly concise treatment of the topic so I couldn't cut too much (mostly examples and tables). And one thing we all need to understand about the Tamil language article is that a significant part of its size is due to two large tables and extensive use of HTML entities (which display as one character but are counted as 5 as far as the page size warning is concerned). So given that, the article does not seem too long to me. --mav 23:37, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

Dev discussion

As soon as I got your message, I hopped on IRC and talked with Jeluf (who is a developer). He said that both your tamil and english accounts use that yahoo address you mentioned. Which means that you should be able to request a new password with no problem.

[01:26] <Raul654> Ok, so should I just tell him to request a new password?
[01:26] <JeLuF> I locked the password, but not the "new password". He should request a new one
[01:26] <Raul654> ok
[01:27] <Raul654> assuming someone did get his password
[01:27] <Raul654> but hasn't changed the email address yet
[01:27] <Raul654> is it possible for you to lock the email address?
[01:27] <JeLuF> No, but as noone can log in to that account, no one can change the email
[01:28] <Raul654> no one can log onto that account?
[01:28] <Raul654> oh, so "locking" the password basically scrambles it
[01:28] <JeLuF> yes
[01:29] <Raul654> ok, do you mind if I send him the last 5 or 10 lines of this conversation?
[01:29] <JeLuF> go ahead

→Raul654 05:30, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

PS - the email with your new password was sitting in one of the server's mail queues. →Raul654 05:32, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

Having a hard time with User:Mel Etitis and User:JMBell. I need your viewpoints concerning this issue, and maybe a brief person-to-person discussion. The article seems to be a bit off in contrast with other articles, and Wikipedia:Style and How-to Directory and Wikipedia:Guide to writing better articles serves the purpose, but both of them seems to have often either attempted to deviate from the mainstream discussion, thus making explanation very difficult. (Mel Etitis has a tendency to "ridicule" my comments by counter-posting his comments on every comment that I have posted that I do not like, and I do not understand why, but it is very distracting. )

I would be very grateful if you can take a look at the article, and post comments on my talk page itself. Thanks.

India page images

An anon User:130.237.79.106 had been replacing the images on the India page. I had messaged him yesterday, but after receiving no response after two warnings I blocked him. He emailed me saying that the images were too balanced in favour of North India. Since I had selected the images, I checked the list:

  1. Taj is from N. India
  2. Gumpa dance is fron NE India; Sikkim
  3. Goa temple is from W India
  4. Sanchi stupa is from Central India
  5. Infosys is from S. India
  6. Himalayas, Vishnu, and Holi can be replaced by more representative images.

What do you think? I think its balanced. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:31, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

It is well balanced. Unfortunately, some of us South Indians mistakenly see everything to the north of us (including the west and north-east) as North India. Perhaps you can add Pongal to the list of secular Indian festivals and Onam to the list of Hindu? festivals to balance the culture section. Please note that I do not seek to place images of any of these. -- Sundar 09:39, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, I've added Pongal (though it doesn't seem to fit in with Hindu festivals). You could try and NPOV things over. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:50, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

Hi The Diwali image IS free. see the license.. Is it not? IndiBoy 10:11, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Commons' politician images

Hi Sundar, I noticed you uploaded some images on India politicians. For one, the licence you offered may not be accurate. The Indian government does retain copyrights to its works for 60 years (ie prior to 01-01-1945) [3] (http://www.naukri.com/lls/copyright/section5.htm). I know it can be argued that the images there are in public interest, (right to information act and so on) but I don't think legally that is the case. Also please do not tag the images as category:India. There is already a category:Indian politicians. See commons:category:India. I don't relish seeing Laloo Prasad's photo suddenly popping out on me in the India cat. I feel only national symbols should be up here. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:17, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
