Violet, Louisiana

Violet is an unincorporated community located in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 8,555.

Violet is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, some 7 & 1/2 miles down from New Orleans.

The town of Violet was named after Violet Blair, whose last name was the source of Blair House, the residence of the Vice-President of the United States. It grew up surrounding the Livaudais Plantation.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.5 mi²). 10.5 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.57% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,555 people, 2,744 households, and 2,266 families residing in the community. The population density is 813.6/km² (2,108.4/mi²). There are 2,918 housing units at an average density of 277.5/km² (719.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 58.29% White, 38.77% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 4.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,744 households out of which 45.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 21.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 14.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 3.41.

The population is spread out with 32.4% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $32,993, and the median income for a family is $36,616. Males have a median income of $32,012 versus $24,799 for females. The per capita income for the community is $13,894. 21.7% of the population and 18.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.7% of those under the age of 18 and 26.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
