Waxhaw, North Carolina

Waxhaw is a town located in Union County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,625. However, Union County has some of the highest rates of growth in the United States, and Waxhaw has seen a major construction boom since 2000. Many new residents live in Waxhaw and work in Charlotte.

Waxhaw is located at 34°55'42" North, 80°44'41" West (34.928201, -80.744835)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Waxhaw is located in a historic region called the Waxhaws, and in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The area is wooded with rolling hills. Waxhaw is also in the region where gold was first found in the United States, and the Howie Gold Mine is not far from the city limits. Andrew Jackson was born near by.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,625 people, 895 households, and 742 families residing in the town. The population density is 359.4/km² (932.5/mi²). There are 937 housing units at an average density of 128.3/km² (332.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 81.22% White, 17.03% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 895 households out of which 44.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.9% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.0% are non-families. 13.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $55,184, and the median income for a family is $58,750. Males have a median income of $40,714 versus $27,159 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,481. 4.3% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
